IndustriAmbiente features Plastikóre: the Catalan solution that cleans microplastics from water without chemicals

Industry outlet IndustriAmbiente explains Plastikóre's quaternary treatment system, able to remove 85-95% of the microfibres present in wastewater without chemical reagents.

On 31 July 2026, the industry outlet IndustriAmbiente published the feature "Plastikóre: the Catalan solution that cleans microplastics from water without chemicals", explaining how our technology removes 85-95% of the microfibres present in wastewater.

A UdG spin-off in collaboration with ICRA

The article notes that Plastikóre is being developed as a spin-off of the University of Girona together with the Catalan Institute for Water Research, with the participation of Marcel Bassachs, and that it has created a quaternary treatment system to retain the microfibres that conventional treatment plants fail to filter.

85-95% capture

Microfibre removal with no chemical reagents and no toxic waste

A physical, circular, low-energy process

The technology is based on a physical and circular process with no reagents: microscopic magnets attach to the plastic particles, a coarse sand reactor retains them and a magnetic system extracts them, all with very low energy consumption. This avoids generating toxic waste, unlike other solutions on the market.

B2B model and maturity status

The business model is B2B, targeting urban wastewater treatment plants, the textile industry and water engineering companies, offering the technology together with maintenance and technical support. The project is currently at TRL 3-4, with laboratory validations, and expects to start the first pilot trials within the next one to two years.

Directive (EU) 2024/3019

Requires treatment plants to remove at least 80% of micropollutants, including microplastics

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals

Plastikóre contributes directly to SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities), 12 (responsible consumption and production) and 14 (life below water).

As Marcel Bassachs puts it: "Plastikóre brings a concrete, measurable solution to a global problem such as microplastic pollution, improving water quality and protecting aquatic ecosystems. It is key that research does not stay in the labs, but becomes technology that improves people's lives and the territory."
